The largest single-family development to be built in Chicago in decades eventually could include 400 houses along the South Branch of the Chicago River. Bridgeport Village will be built by Snitzer Homes on approximately 40 acres of land between 32nd and 34th streets.

The heavily landscaped plans include a 1,700-foot-long nature walk, with a series of private parks. The builder also owns land immediately across the river, and is working with the city for an extension of the development, with another 120 single-family houses, according to Thomas A. Snitzer, company president.

Any development will accommodate the city's desire to bring river walks and parks to the river fronts, he said. Snitzer said he would like to see a pedestrian overpass connecting both sides of the river and possibly boat docks.

The first phase of the development will include 2- and 3-story houses with front porches, gabled roofs and bay windows. Seven model homes and a sales center already are open at the site. The houses will have 3, 4 or 5 bedrooms, 21/2 to 41/2 baths, 2,400 to 5,270 square feet of space and 2- or 3-car garages. Most of the houses will be built on traditional 251/2-by-107 foot Chicago lots. The corner sites will be 35 feet wide for the larger designs. Prices will start at $325,000 to $390,000. English basements and third floors are optional.
